Lifejackets are a vital piece of safety equipment for any recreational boater, and they’re not the bulky, cumbersome style of jacket you might think. Better design and technology has led to a range of lifejacket styles that look good, are easy to wear and don’t get in the way of your favourite activity on the water. In fact, there’s a style of jacket for just about every activity and body shape, including convenient inflatable models. Not wearing a lifejacket can have serious consequences. Sadly, 8 out of 10 people who drowned in NSW while boating were not wearing a lifejacket. It is strongly recommended that you always wear one.

Safety on the water is paramount. The Skipper is in charge and responsible for the safety of all on board.I have been an ambassador for wearing Lifejackets while boating for 8 years in a NSW state wide campaign which hopefully has helped save lives. Wearing a Lifejacket is easy and never interferes with my fishing out on the river dam or at sea. If by chance I end up in the water I know that I’ll be safe until help arrives. While wearing a Lifejacket is very important there are a number of other safety measures a boater needs to know. Always check the weather and tides before launching your boat. Preparation is the key to safety so be prepared to change your plans if bad weather is forecast.Keeping a proper lookout for divers flags, swimmers, floating debris,and the movements of other vessels can also help save you from an on water catastrophe.
Towing kids around on inflatable toys and driving at safe speeds is important at all times as well as ensuring your under the legal alcohol limit. There is a lot that can go wrong if your not playing it safe and always make sure that you have all the correct safety gear on board every time. Boating is one of my favourite pastimes and I love being on the water with friends and family. If I can dangle a line and have a fun filled safe day out with family or friends then everyone can enjoy the experience.
